Paying for college is a significant concern for many students, and at UNM-Taos, we’re committed to making higher education accessible and affordable. Our Financial Aid Office offers a variety of options including grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study opportunities to help you finance your education. How to Apply for Financial Aid

Complete the FAFSA

The first step in applying for financial aid is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is used to determine your eligibility for federal, state, and institutional financial aid. Be sure to use UNM-Taos’ school code: 002663.

Submit Additional Documentation

After submitting your FAFSA, you may be required to provide additional documentation. This can include tax returns, W-2 forms, and verification worksheets. Check your UNM email and the Student Financial Aid Portal regularly for updates and requests for information.

Review Your Financial Aid Offer

Once your FAFSA and any required documentation have been reviewed, you will receive a financial aid offer. This offer will outline the types and amounts of aid you are eligible to receive. Log in to the Student Financial Aid Portal to view your financial aid award.

Maintain Eligibility

To continue receiving financial aid, you must meet certain academic and enrollment requirements.

Types of Financial Aid

Grants

Federal Pell Grant

A need-based grant for undergraduate students. The amount awarded depends on your financial need, cost of attendance, and enrollment status.

State Scholarships

New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship

The New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship provides tuition and required fee assistance for state residents who meet eligibility and are pursuing a training certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree at a New Mexico public college or university. The scholarship covers up to 100 percent of tuition and required fees and up to $50 per credit hour for course specific fees. To learn more, visit the New Mexico Higher Education Department website.

New Mexico Legislative Lottery Scholarship

The New Mexico Legislative Lottery Scholarship provides college tuition to recent high school graduates pursuing degrees full time. The scholarship covers a portion of college tuition at any New Mexico public or Tribal college or university for students pursuing associate and bachelor’s degrees. Loans

Federal Direct Loans

Low-interest loans available to students and parents. These include Subsidized Loans, Unsubsidized Loans, and PLUS Loans.

Work Study

Federal/State Work Study Program

Veterans Benefits

If you are a veteran or active-duty military (or dependent), you might be eligible for educational benefits, including the GI Bill, and other support services. Our Veterans Upward Bound program is designed to assist veterans in their post-secondary education goals. All VUB services are free to eligible veterans.
