Cielo Centro
Dark Skies
One of our most precious natural resources is the dark sky. Yet less than one percent of the population in the US and Europe can witness its unspoiled beauty due to light pollution. At the Cielo Centro observatory, we are committed to preserving this natural wonder. By minimizing light pollution, we not only enhance the stargazing experience but also conserve energy and protect local wildlife and ecosystems.
STEM Learning
Cielo Centro will serve as an educational hub, offering hands-on learning experiences for K-12 students, college students, and the general public. The center will expand astronomy and physical science classes taught at UNM–Taos and provide work-study opportunities for students, further nurturing interest in science, technology, engineering, and math.
Local Economy
The observatory is poised to become a significant economic asset for the region. By attracting tourists and astronomy enthusiasts, it will boost local businesses and create new opportunities for community and visitor engagement.
Join Us
Support our mission through advocacy and fundraising, and help put Taos on the map as a global leader in dark sky astronomical education. Together, we can ensure that future generations continue to marvel at the brilliance of the night sky.
About Our Name
Although the literal Spanish translation might be Centro del Cielo, we chose Cielo Centro to honor the bilingual spirit of Taos. This Spanglish phrasing reflects our community’s unique cultural and linguistic diversity.
