New Mexico Veterans Upward Bound prepares former military service members for college and career opportunities. The program offers academic and professional skills development through instruction, advising, and tutoring.

Veterans Upward Bound at UNM-Taos is the only Federal TRIO Program funded by the US Department of Education for military service veterans in New Mexico.

All NMVUB services—including instruction, textbooks, advising, tutoring, and supplies—are free to eligible veterans.

Services Offered

  • Academic skills development to support college admission
  • Refresher courses in English, math, science, financial planning, study skills, and computer literacy
  • Math and science preparation
  • Assistance with filing for VA benefit claims
  • Support from local veterans agencies

Application Requirements

  • Must have served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for more than 180 days and been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable; or been discharged or released because of a service-connected disability
  • Must have served as a member of a reserve component in the U.S. Armed Forces and been called to active duty for more than 30 days; or served on active duty in support of a contigency operation on or after Sep. 11, 2001

Who should apply?

Former military members considering college, university, technical, or trade school, and those in need of academic skill building for career advancement opportunities.

When should I apply?

As soon as possible. The sooner you call—the more we can help prepare you for post-secondary education. The ideal time to apply is at least one semester before you want to enroll in college, university, vocational, or technical training.

What will I do?

Our services are free and optional. You can work with an advisor to create a plan that meets your specific needs.

Which school can I attend?

Any accredited institution. NMVUB is hosted at UNM-Taos, but we work with schools across New Mexico to serve students. We will help you prepare for and get accepted into the college of your choice.
