For more than thirty years, Gina Vigil has been the heart and soul of education and community at UNM-Taos. From her early days as a work-study student to her full-time service, which began in the mid-1990s, Gina’s unwavering dedication has shaped the very fabric of the institution.
On March 4, Gina and seven other Women of Impact were celebrated at the Taos News’ annual Taoseña Awards at El Monte Sagrado.
Today, as business manager and grants administrator, she masterfully oversees accounting, purchasing, and the stewardship of more than $4 million in annual grants—resources that transform the lives of students, families, staff, and academic programs across Northern New Mexico. Her efforts ripple outwards, touching countless lives in profound, often unseen ways. Gina’s unwavering integrity and poise are legendary. Her professionalism and deep well of institutional knowledge make her a guiding light for all who navigate the often-challenging systems of higher education. With a servant’s heart, she lifts others up, never seeking the spotlight but always ensuring their success. As a proud Taos native and graduate of Taos High School, Gina’s roots run deep, fueling her fierce devotion to our community.
Humility is another one of Gina’s qualities. Upon hearing she won the award, she shared, “I was appreciative that I was nominated, but didn’t feel deserving. I declined the nomination at first, but after having my arm twisted [LOL], I agreed. I really don’t like being in the spotlight.”
Her tireless commitment is a shining example of the transformative power of women whose essential work, though rarely celebrated, sustains and strengthens us all—every single day.
