Tips for Filling Out the FAFSA Form

Financial Aid awards are need-based. Your need is determined by the income information on your Federal Income Tax return from the prior calendar year. For example, if you plan to enroll in the Fall of 2004, use the information from your 2003 Federal Income Tax Return.

—> Determine your status - independent or dependent. This is determined by the answers to the seven questions, below:

1.
Were you born before January 1, 1981?
2
As of today are you married?
3
Are you enrolled in a Master's or Doctoral progrm during the 2004-2005 school year?
4
  Do you have children?
5
Do you have dependents other than children or spouse who live with you and receive more than one-half of their support from you?
6
Are you or were you an orphan or a ward of the court until age 18?
7
Are you a veteran of the United States Armed Forces?

  • If the answers to all seven questions are NO you are considered to be DEPENDENT and you must report income for both yourself and your parent(s).

  • If the answer to any of the seven questions is YES you are considered to be INDEPENDENT and you only need to report your income and your spouse's income (if applicable).
