Grants - Grants are awarded based on need
and DO NOT have to be repaid. In addition to the general
eligibility requirements, you must be enrolled as an undergraduate
in an eligible degree program and not have a previous baccalaureate
degree. Some grants that are available to students in New Mexico
are the Federal Pell Grant, the Federal Supplemental Educational
Opportunity Grant, and the New Mexico State Student Incentive Grant.

Student Loans - You should apply for a loan only if you
do not qualify and have been turned down for other forms of financial
aid. A student loan is a loan that usually carries a lower interest
rate that other types of loans. A Student Loan is a serious and
legal financial obligation and it is a form of financial aid
that must be repaid. The UNM-Taos Financial Aid office can
guide you through applying for a Student Loan.

Workstudy benefits are monies paid to the student as compensation
for work performed during the semester. These monies DO NOT
need to be repaid. Workstudy position openings are posted on this

Eligibility
Requirements
To be eligible to receive financial aid you must:
- Have a high school diploma or GED.
- Be a degree-seeking student.
- Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
- If you are male, a statement of registration indicating that
you have registered with the Selective Service or that you are
not required to register.
- Be enrolled for at least six credit hours (for most financial
aid programs).
- Not owe money to any federal or state financial aid program.
- Not be in default on any federal or state educational loans.
- Meet satisfactory academic progress requirements.
- Not be receiving financial aid from two different educational
institutions in the same semester.
- Complete and submit required forms and applications by the deadlines
Deadlines
January 1 is the earliest date for submitting
the FAFSA form
June 30 is the date by which the FAFSA form
must be received by the Federal Aid Student Programs office.
Academic
Requirements
Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy
Federal regulations require that to remain eligible for financial
aid, you must perform in the classroom according to the University's
Satisfactory Academic Progress policy. Student academic progress
is reviewed at the end of each academic year for programs at least
two years in length. For programs shorter than two years in length,
academic progress is reviewed at the end of each semester. For students
not meeting the University's standard, financial aid will be canceled.
