Why do I have to apply and be admitted before I meet with an Academic Advisor?

This is the first step to be considered an “Enrolled Student” at UNM-Taos. This also ensures your transcripts and important information are in the system so your academic advisor can assist you. You will also be able to create your NetID and obtain your Lobo ID card.

What if I do not yet know which degree or certificate I would like to pursue or I am undecided?

Many incoming freshmen students do not yet know what they would like to study. UNM-Taos is an excellent place for students to begin their educational journey. The Associate of Arts-Liberal Arts is the degree best suited for the “Basics” or Core Curriculum. You can discuss this further with an academic advisor.

What is a NetID and why do I need to create one?

Your NetID is your gateway into the UNM online system, LoboWeb. You can take care of many student functions via LoboWeb. This will also serve as your UNM email address, which is a required form of communication. Instructors and staff may not respond to emails from emails other than @unm.edu.

Why do I need to meet with a Financial Aid Advisor?

It is important students meet with a Financial Aid Advisor to understand what one may qualify for. There are many forms of financial aid with specific criteria and deadlines students and parents need to know. For example, incoming freshmen may qualify for the Bridge Scholarship followed by the NM Lottery Scholarship if one meets certain criteria.

What is a placement test and why do I have to take this?

It is very important for you and your academic advisor to understand your academic placement in reading, writing, and math skills. This will help ensure you are properly placed into courses in these subjects. UNM-Taos wants all students to be successful. Study materials are available beforehand at CASA. Students are always encouraged to take the placement test even if you have taken the SAT or ACT. You can contact CASA at 575-737-3695 for any additional questions.

Why do I need to schedule an Appointment with an Academic Advisor?

It is important you understand your certificate or degree requirements in an effort to complete your studies in a timely and strategic manner so you can enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year degree program.

Is UNM-Taos affordable?

Yes! UNM-Taos has one of the most affordable tuition rates for NM residents. See current tuition and fees in the current course schedule. Please note! There is no additional tuition charged for 12+ credit hours up to 18 credit hours.

Are UNM-Taos academic classes accepted at other colleges?

Most academic credits earned at UNM-Taos can be transferred to other colleges and universities in New Mexico. We offer “Core Academic Curriculum”, commonly referred to as “the Basics”. Be sure to speak with your academic advisor about technical courses as these are not always transferable.

I’m trying to register, but LoboWeb says I have an advisement hold. Why do I have a hold on my account?

UNM Taos encourages advisement every semester. For this reason, most students have mandatory advisement holds. This hold is placed to support students and help ensure you are taking courses, which will help meet academic goal(s). This is important because there are many factors to consider such as; core requirements, pre-requisites, Major / Area of Focus, and scholarship requirements.

OK. So now I know why I have a hold. How do I have it removed?

To have an academic hold taken off your account, you’ll just need to visit with your academic advisor. You may contact the Department of Instruction in Taos Pueblo Hall West or at 575-737-6225 to identify your advisor and schedule an appointment.

How do I drop a class?

Depending on the date, dropping a class is simple... If you have an academic advisement hold or other hold on your account you will not be able to drop a course without seeing or speaking to an academic advisor first. Please consider how dropping a class will affect your financial aid and scholarships. Below are some other considerations you will also want to take into account.

  • ALWAYS consider the potential impact on your academic progress. By withdrawing from or dropping a class, your ultimate progress towards graduation may be delayed. On the other hand, not dropping a course that will negatively affect your GPA may slow your academic progress if it causes you to be suspended. Please visit with one of our advisors to help you make this decision!

  • ALWAYS consider the potential impact on your scholarships and/or financial aid. All scholarships and financial aid require you to maintain a specific number of credit hours per semester AND a specific GPA. Don't forget to take both into account when considering dropping a class.

  • Dropping a Class Without a Grade. You can only drop a class without a grade before the end of the third week of the current 16-week semester (see the Schedule of Classes for twelve-week or other classes). Classes dropped before this time, are not recorded on your official transcript.
