ARCHITECTS - GREEN
AND SOLAR
SPEAKER BACKGROUNDS
MARK W. CHALOM, Architect
Mark specializes in blending handcrafted Traditional and Contemporary
styles with sustainable technologies. His company, Solar Design & Analysis,
is a full service architectural firm that has been on the cutting
edge of passive solar design since 1975. Mark's experience
spans both design and construction of environmentally appropriate
buildings. His work has been published in various books, national
magazines and part of an international earth exhibit
in Paris, France.
Mark has taken his architecture beyond Passive
Solar and looks at the total structure, site, materials,
systems, water, landscaping and their interaction with each
other and the environment. His sensitivity to the historic
cultures has blended these new technologies with the traditional
forms and materials that have evolved here in Northern New
Mexico out of common sense and appropriateness.
Mark is known
for his expertise in the development of the Toolbar
"Solar Adobe" and has over two hundred of these buildings
to his credit. He is always exploring other appropriate materials
and how to integrate them into his projects.
Mark has lectured
and taught classes from elementary school to college level
programs. He also conducted several hands on workshops on
adobe and passive solar design at Solar Energy International,
Southwest Solar Adobe School, Los Lunas NM, the Santa Fe
Community College, The Ghost Ranch Conference Center Abiquiu,
The Heard Museum, Phoenix and through Adobe Solar Associates,
a professional educational group that he was a partner in.

Living Law Office Building was recently written up in the
Palm Beach Post. These three projects represent the direction
DLSI strives for in green design, although DLSI has also
managed to work significant water recycling and ecological
principles into many utilitarian projects such as car dealerships,
automobile body shops, and commercial condominiums.
