Harvard Girl Editing & Word Services Presents..."WRITING FOR RESULTS"
Apr 16 & Apr 23 2008 in Room 223 (Arts Center Classroom) Klauer Campus
Time: Two two-hour segments, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Cost: $50 including materials (workbook and handouts)

Did you know that your reader, customer, or clients will decide in less than 5.7 seconds to either read your letter, brochure, proposal, or email-or throw it away? Did you know that certain words inspire action while others inspire confusion or even anger? These are just a couple of the things you need to know to begin to write for results. In this seminar, Heidi Ratner-Connolly, Harvard graduate, freelance editor/writer and former corporate trainer, will share how to maximize potential and profit by using the words that count; how to get the results you want by using her "10 Things You Need to Know" writing tips; and how to communicate that you are a true professional by learning to design your messages, from ads to reports to e-mails, effectively. In other words: Learn to say what you mean, mean what you say...and achieve the goals you want! Perfect for insurance, medical, banking, and all other business professionals…in essence, anyone who wants to improve his or her writing skills--FAST. For More Information call Heidi Connolly at 575.758.4713 or to register call Theresa at UNM Taos at 575.737.6270.

Here is a bit of the content:

1. HOW TO MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION: 5.7 Seconds is all you get to make your point before your reader decides to read or throw away what you’ve written.
2. COMMUNICATING YOUR MESSAGE: How to make every word count; how to use words with care regardless of the format—an ad, a brochure, or a letter.
3. INSPIRING YOUR READER TO TAKE ACTION: It takes the right words and the right message combined to get people to do what you want them to do. If you don’t know what you want them to do, you can be sure they won’t either.
4. WHEN THE WORDS YOU USE ARE THE WRONG WORDS: Do you know when your words are at odds with your meaning? Find out which words can make people unhappy, annoyed, or even angry, and how to change them.
5. STRUCTURAL FORMATTING: Easy methods for organizing what you want to say ensure that your message is clear and concise every time.

The University of New Mexico Taos is excited to again offer an unusual opportunity to photographers to learn about using digital cameras in one of America’s most spectacular (and warm) desert environments. From Sunday, January 6, 2008 to Saturday, January 12, join us at Furnace Creek in Death Valley National Park, California for a week of photography and practical digital camera instruction. Learn the ins and outs of getting your camera to take exactly the pictures you want in the midst of some of the most breathtaking landscapes on this planet.

Joseph Ciaglia, a Taos area photographer whose digital panoramic landscapes of the desert have won awards and acclaim in New Mexico, will lead the workshop. A teacher at UNM Taos, his book “Introduction to Digital Photography” (Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2nd edition) is used at colleges across the United States and Canada. Joe has been visiting Death Valley since 1969 and regards it as his favorite photographic site. To see a sampling of his work, visit rareearthnewmexico.com.

Each day will be an adventure. We’ll photograph in the morning and take a long lunch during which we’ll demonstrate digital camera techniques while discussing the questions raised and lessons learned during the morning’s shooting. In the afternoon we’ll shoot again, usually at a different location, and we’ll work until a (hopefully) spectacular desert sunset ends the day. After dinner we’ll assemble at Furnace Creek Ranch to share our day’s work by viewing the pictures on a big screen with a computer LCD projector while recharging batteries and recording everyone’s pictures onto compact discs for safekeeping.

Cost: $ 750. This is for the instructional program, and does not include transportation, food, lodging, or admission to the park. A discount rate of $595 is available to current UNM students, faculty, and staff.

The workshop will be limited to six participants.
