CHINESE CULTURE CLUB NEWS UPDATE

UNM Taos Chinese Culture Club members at Phoenix Peak near Beijing during spring break 2006.
UNM Taos Chinese Culture Club welcomes new members and support from our community. This school year, fund raise events will continue in the form of T-shirt sales, book-exchange, Asian film series and art exhibits. Scholarship funds raise in these events benefit UNM Taos students directly in their immediate needs for studying abroad expenses.

UNM Taos Chinese Culture Club made an initial donation to the UNM Taos International Programs last fall and helped establish this new source of scholarship funding.
During Spring 2007, a Chinese New Year celebration also brought in more donations for this scholarship fund. As a result, three UNM Taos scholars received financial awards to go to China for their studies. Club officers, members and local supporters all joined in to make it possible. A big round of applause to them.

UNM Taos Art Gallery in the Lobby at 115 Civic Plaza Drive

Our China Study class went to Phoenix Peak near Beijing during spring break and came back with a multitude of great experiences and beautiful memories captured by the group.
Pearl Huang, Chinese language, culture instructor, and Coordinator of UNM Taos International Programs designed this initial exhibit with Calligraphy by Pearl and photography by Rick Bull. Stop by 115 Civic Plaza Drive front lobby and enjoy the art and support our programs. We welcome new art submissions from students and faculty. If you have not walked out the west doors of the ART building onto the brick path to the gravel parking lot you may have missed all the bustling of Ray Walter's Photovoltaic [PV] Electricity class as they participated in installing the new walk lights and PV array with battery bank the past couple of months. Service-Learning Comes of Age at UNM-Taos

Three business students pour over financial records, enthusiastically planning the presentation of their business plan to a new business owner. A class of advanced computer programming students work with a mission statement and photo layout as they develop a web page for a local non-profit organization. These are two examples of Service-Learning at work in the classrooms of UNM-Taos this semester. They are part of a growing movement toward experiential learning opportunities- ways to apply academic studies to real world situations and deepen learning while benefiting our community.

Students interested in pursuing a program in Early Childhood Multicultural Education can do so through the UNM-Taos AA in Early Childhood Multicultural Education program currently offered. There is often much speculation about what keeps UNM-Taos students stimulated, what obstacles they face in attending and continuing in school, and how important student-faculty relationships are. Instead of speculation, we can find out directly from students about how they view their engagement at UNM-Taos. We can also compare the responses of faculty with those of students about student engagement.

Community College Day at the New Mexico State Legislature and the New Mexico Association of Community Colleges (NMACC) All-State Academic Scholarship Awards

Community College Day and the New Mexico Association of Community Colleges (NMACC) All-State Academic Scholarship Awards Teams took place at the New Mexico State Legislative at the State Capitol on Monday, February 13, 2006 in Santa Fe. UNM-Taos student, Francisco Ochoa of San Cristobal, NM is the recipient of a full 4-year scholarship under the All-State Academic Team. Mr. Ochoa maintains a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.9. Dr. Alicia Chavez UNM-Taos Branch Executive Director and Mr. Frank Renz, NMACC Executive Director presented Mr. Ochoa the award, scholar cord.and medallion. UNM-Taos administration is proud of Francisco Ochoa’s accomplishments as he pursues his teaching Degree and return to Taos as an educator.

2005 Solar Summer Intensive at UNM-Taos was a hit!

29 students took part in 3 different courses focused on sustainability and solar energy use. Gael Minton taught Organic Farming and had an energetic group of people visiting and lending a helping hand at several Organic Farms in the Taos area and a new soil farm in La Jarosa, Colorado.

On November 4, 2005, the Page Johnson Lawson Memorial Nursing Scholarship, in the cash amount of $800.00, was awarded to Bernadette Seranno, a sophomore at the University of New Mexico-Taos. The Page Johnson Lawson Memorial Nursing Scholarship is a donor gift that was established for the support of one Nursing student at UNM-Taos with a value of $800 per semester (1,600.00), and awarded for two semesters.

UNM-Taos instructor to show in New York

William Stewart instructor of drawing and painting. Art department, UNM, Taos will have two works included in an exhibition of watercolors, ^Watercurrents," at the Kouros Gallery, New York City opening July 27th, 2005. Mr. Stewart was invited to participate in the exhibit by the show's curator, Carolyn Harris. Ms. Harris is a painter living in New York City who shows at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery.
