BusinessThe Associate of Arts in Elementary Education is designed for the student who is planning to enter a baccalaureate program upon completion, or who wants to work as a school aide. Students need to be aware of the Core Curriculum and College graduation requirements at UNM or any other four-year institution. It is the student’s responsibility to contact an academic advisor before registering for courses in the degree program. See second page for specific teaching field requirements. Note: lower division courses will not substitute for Professional Education course requirements.

MATH 112 Math for Elem/Middle Teachers II
MATH 216 Math for Elem/Middle Teachers III

Social Sciences - 3 Credit Hours

Choose one (1) from the following:
ANTH 101 or 130;
ECON 105 or 106;
GEOG 102;
POLS 110 or 200;
SOC 101.

History - 12 Credit Hours
Choose four (4) from the following:
HIST 101 or 102; 161 or 162; 260;
History elective.
Science - 12 Credit Hours

NTSC 261L Physical Science
NTSC 262L Life Science
NTSC 263L Environmental Science

NTSC courses are strongly recommended.

Teaching Field Preparation
Twenty-four (24) to Thirty-six (36) semester hours in one teaching field is required in a degree program at UNM Albuquerque for teacher preparation licensure. These hours should be planned with an academic advisor. The following courses are recommended lower division preparation for Teaching Fields, and must be passed with a B or better. A teaching field is not required for completion of the A.A. Degree. Note: Not all of these courses will be offered on a regular basis at UNM-Taos.
