Southwest Studies (AA)

1. Students completing the A.A. degree program in Southwest Studies will have satisfied general-education requirements of UNM and comparable four-year institutions.
2. Students completing the A.A. degree program in Southwest Studies will be able to transfer into four-year programs at UNM or comparable institutions and complete their B. A. program with a major or minor in the field of Southwest Studies, Native American Studies, Chicano Studies, American Studies, American History, American Literature, Sociology, Anthropology, Geography and Early Childhood Multicultural Education.
3. Students completing the A.A. degree program in Southwest Studies will develop career-related presentations that will prepare them to interview for entry-level positions in Contract Anthropology, Art History and Museum Preparation, and Interpretation or Docent work for galleries, museums, historical landmarks and monuments, tour providers, State and National Parks, and BLM lands.
4. Students completing the A.A. degree program in Southwest Studies may use this regional perspective for a broad spectrum of professions in human- and cultural-resource management.
5. Students completing the AA degree program in Southwest Studies will demonstrate basic knowledge of
a) Geographical and cultural extent of the various definitions of what constitutes "The Southwest" and how these U.S. definitions relate to "El Norte" from the Mexican perspective;
b) Profiles of bio regions including Chihuahuan Desert, Sonoran Desert, Basin and Range, Canyon Lands, Mountain "Sky Islands," and major river systems;
c) The history of the Southwest as Frontier/Frontera, with crossroads of trade, conquest, assimilation, and mestizaje;
d) New Mexico as Pueblo, Athabascan, and Hispano homelands, with 19th-20th-Century immigration of "Anglo," African-American, Asian, military, and mainstream American culture, and more recent overlays of subcultures based in Federal Public Lands Management, nuclear, arts, tourist, and outdoor recreation businesses;
e) Awareness of the dynamic roles of cultural conservation, innovation, and revival to the region's ongoing sense of multiple identities;
f) The recent increase along the U.S.-Mexico Border of drug-cartel-related violence, U.S. political reaction to immigration, and the U.S. militarization of the Borderlands. |
