English Program Faculty

English Faculty Robert Arellano
(BA & MFA, Brown University) is coordinator of the English program. He has served on the faculties of Brown University and the Institute of American Indian Arts and is the author of an internet-published interactive novel, two traditional novels, and the bilingual border comic "Dead in Desemboque." Bob enjoys teaching along the broad horizon of norteño/Southwestern literature and writing.

Andy Dennison
(BA, Colby College, MA, Northern Arizona University) Teaches Exposition (ENG 101), Argument & Analysis (ENG 102), Introduction to Creative Writing-Fiction (ENG 221), Technical and Professional Writing (ENG 219), and Expository Writing II (ENG 220). He also teaches in the Communications & Journalism Department and advises the Taos Times, the student newspaper. He has taught at Northern Arizona University, Yavapai College, and Northern Prep Academy.  His story “Two Dogs” was published in Spitball in 2002.  In addition, he has worked as both a reporter and editor for various newspaper in Colorado, Arizona, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

English Faculty Bonnie Black
(BA, Columbia University, MFA Candidate, Antioch University) is a veteran instructor at UNM-Taos, who teaches Essay Writing, Exposition (ENG 101), Argument & Analysis (ENG 102), and Creative Non-Fiction (ENG 223). Her essay about her experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Gabon, “Machete Lessons,” appears in the new anthology A Matter of Choice: 25 People Who Transformed Their Lives, published by Seal Press.  Her book Somewhere Child was published by Viking Press in 1981 and continues to appear on the reading lists of support groups for families of abducted children.

English Faculty Pam Brody
(BA, Pittsburgh State University, MA, Southern Methodist University) teaches Basic Writing and Reading Skills (IS-E 098 and 090, IS-R 100) in our Introductory Studies program plus GS 293--Student Success in College. Prior to moving to Taos, she taught developmental writing and reading, study skills, and English in the Dallas Community College District at the Richland and Northlake campuses. She has also worked as an art consultant, data processor, and computer contractor.  She is co-owner and founder of Brody and White Consulting, where she serves as a business consultant for artists in the Taos area

  Anna Eyre
(BA, University of New Mexico, MFA, California College of Arts), teaches Exposition (ENG 101) and Analysis & Argument (ENG 102). A native Taoseno, she has taught remedial and introductory English classes at the Taos Pueblo School and California College of Arts. A chapbook of her poetry, Metaplasmic, was published in 2004. She is also the faculty advisor for the UNM-Taos literary magazine.

  Steve Fox
(BA, University of North Texas, MA and Ph.D. in American Studies, University of New Mexico) teaches Exposition (ENG 101) and Analysis & Argument (ENG 102). He has taught English and American Studies at UNM-Albuquerque and organized the CAPS Writing Lab for writing tutors. He also directed the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities. His publications include Toxic Work—Women Workers at GTE Lenkurt (Temple U. Press, 1991), and articles or chapters appearing in The Multicultural Southwest, A Reader; The Cold War American West; Religion in Modern New Mexico; Transmissions and Receptions—US Mass Culture in Europe; and The Workbook—Journal of Environmental and Social Change. He is currently writing a memoir of his experiences while in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Greece.

Lise Goett
(BA, University of Iowa, MA, New York University, MFA, Columbia University) teaches Argument & Analysis (ENG 102) and Introduction to Creative Writing-Poetry (ENG 222). She has taught at New York University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She is the recipient of several awards, including The Southwest PEN Award and The Paris Review Discovery Prize.  She has published poetry in Ploughshares, The Antioch Review, the American Literary Review, and Phoebe.  Her book Waiting for the Paraclete was published by Beacon Press in 2002.

  Anna Lujan
(BA, University of Southern Colorado, MA, New Mexico Highlands) teaches Introductory Studies courses, including Reading I (IS-R 020), Reading II (IS-R 021), and English Fundamentals (IS-E 099). A longtime educator in Taos County, she taught at Taos High School and was principal at Enos Garcia Middle School/Arroyo Seco Elementary School

  Kevin Mahoney
(BFA, University of Oklahoma, MFA, Indiana University) teaches Exposition (ENG 101). He also teaches film and theatre courses in the Arts Department. Previously, he taught English at four college preparatory schools in California, and was a lecturer in screen writing and television writing at the University of Oklahoma. He also was interim director of The Sooner Theatre in Norman, Okla., and has been a judge for several film festivals.

Tom Shaw
(BA, University of Alabama, MA, University of Northern Iowa, Ph.D. Candidate, California Institute of Integral Studies) has been on the adjunct faculty at UNM-Taos since 2000. He  teaches Essay Writing (IS-E 100), Exposition (ENG 101), Surveys in Early and Later American Literature (ENG 296 and 297), and Greek Mythology (ENG 107).  He has taught at the University of Iowa, Cornell College, Northern New Mexico Community College, and Navajo Community College in Arizona.  He also teaches courses in the History and Women’s Studies departments at UNM-Taos.
