Learning is a life-long task-- and a life-long adventure! As our lives change, so do our educational needs. What is right at one stage of life may not be the right choice in another stage of life. It is for this reason that the Trades and Industries Academy at the University of New Mexico- Taos remains committed to providing career and technical education for the communities of northern New Mexico and surrounding region. Our courses and programs are designed to prepare students for career opportunities and changes, as well as self-employment and personal enrichment.

The Academy of Trades and Industry courses include a wide variety of both traditional and contemporary career choices. The Construction Technology Certificate and Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree gives students the basic knowledge and skills in traditional construction practices (Carpentry, Electrical Wiring, Plumbing, Blueprint Reading and Adobe Construction) but also in new practices and techniques (Alternative Building & Construction, Owner Built Home, Solar Design and Photovoltaics).

Our Woodworking Certificate program prepares professionals and amateurs alike to be able to create the furniture, woodcarvings (including Santos and sculpture) and cabinetry that they envision. Traditional woodworking techniques like mortise-and-tenon joinery and frame-and-panel construction are taught along with contemporary techniques like lamination and biscuit joinery.

The Culinary Arts program offers a Certificate program that prepares the aspiring Chef, the professional food service worker and the passionate amateur. It includes the basics of food preparation and service along with International and Southwestern Cuisine.

The Wilderness Education courses give students the knowledge and skills they need to survive in, be safe and enjoy the outdoors. Students that are contemplating a career in outdoor activities will find our courses to be excellent preparation for the future.

Physical Education classes are as varied as the interests of our students. With courses like Scuba Diving, Kickboxing, Power Yoga, Step Aerobics, Zumba, Spinning and Weight Training, it is easy to see why students of all ages are signing up for these classes.
