Students Working
UNM-Taos Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program offers instruction in basic literacy, General Education Development (GED) preparation in both Spanish and English, and English as a Second Language (ESL) for adult students who are at least 16 years of age. If your goal is to attain a GED, get a better job, be ready for college, learn to speak English, or simply improve your reading, writing and math skills, this program is for you. We have students from very beginning to more advanced skill levels; those who want to be able to read to their children and grandchildren and others who wish to enroll at UNM-Taos but don't feel they are quite ready.

These academic programs are free of charge. Classes are offered during the days, evenings, and Saturdays. We also have a computer lab for independent work and the help of volunteer tutors to provide one-on-one instruction. Classes are offered throughout the community, including at the Taos Public Library, the Taos Youth and Family Center, the Taos High School, and Rocky Mountain Youth Corps. We also offer a class in Questa and will soon offer another in Penasco.

If you are interested in obtaining your GED, our program offers free pre-tests to determine your skill level and advises you about whether you are ready to take the official test or what specific coursework will help you to successfully pass the exam. The official GED test is also offered by UNM-Taos and costs $70.00. Students who pass the GED test will be awarded a High School Equivalency Diploma and are encouraged to participate in the UNM-Taos Commencement Ceremony each May.

Our goal is to ensure that students are successful
in attaining their goals!

Our office is located at the UNM-Taos Medical Center, 1398 Weimer Road, Taos, NM 87571 (across from Holy Cross Hospital). For more information or to sign up for a UNM-Taos ABE/GED/ESL program, please call (505) 758-5904.
